The Mid-West Planning District (MWPD) is responsible for the administration and enforcement of each of its member municipality's Building By-Laws. This includes the design and construction of new buildings and the alteration (renovations, additions) or reconstruction of existing buildings and any requirements that are necessary to correct unsafe conditions in existing buildings.
To that end, MWPD has applications for and issues building and plumbing permits for all buildings.
We review the submitted application and through a plan review check that building plans and required drawings meet the current Manitoba Building, Plumbing, Energy and Fire Codes (Codes).
Which construction and safety sections of the Codes are applicable to your project will depend on size and use of the building. Please note that "storage" is considered an occupancy.
Below is a basic breakdown of the overarching Manitoba Building Code construction Parts, but please contact us if you have any questions about how your building would be classified.
Buildings under Part 2 of the Manitoba Building Code:
- Agricultural buildings classified as a G1, G2, G3, or G4 occupancy that are over 600m2 in footprint size.
Buildings under Part 3 of the Manitoba Building Code:
- Post disaster buildings,
- Assembly, Care/Detention, and High Hazard occupancies, plus
- Residential, Business/Personal Services, Mercantile (retail), and Medium and Low Hazard occupancies that are over 600m2 in footprint size OR over 3 storeys in building height.
Buildings under Part 9 of the Manitoba Building Code:
- Residential, Business/Personal Services, Mercantile (retail), and Medium and Low Hazard occupancies that are up to 600m2 in footprint size OR up to 3 storeys in building height.
Inspections are required according to the complexity of the plans submitted and are unique to the project.
Buildings that do not have Manitoba Building Code assigned/applicable to them, but do require conformance with the municipal zoning by-law for placement on a property:
- Agricultural buildings up to 600m2
- Accessory buildings up to 108ft2
- Structures that do not hold an occupancy such as fences, communication towers, permanent playground equipment, parking lots, etc.
